  1. Earth sheltered construction, or earth sheltering, is the practice of heaping earth over and/or around a building. This increases the insulation of the building against extremes of both hot and cold. It is an ancient building technique, but has recently returned to popularity as one aspect of passive solar construction.

Earth-sheltered design employs the earth as a major component of a building’s thermal control system. A house that is surrounded (completely or partially) by earth that stays at a steady 55-60° temperature year round requires less heating in the winter and less cooling in the summer.

Earth sheltering is a more extreme version of earth berming, where the north side (and perhaps the east and west sides) of the house is buried more extensively, often right up to the roof. Surprisingly, with proper design and forethought, earth-sheltered homes are just as light as traditional houses built entirely above ground.

Earth-sheltering is a way of constructing buildings using earth against the walls and/or roof to create a natural external thermal mass. While numerous studies have shown that Earth-sheltered construction can reduce heat loss and maintain a constant indoor air temperature, the technique was not utilized in high numbers in Washington State.
