There is little or no evidence that treating gingivitis with antibiotics alone is effective. In cases of feline gingivitis that are due to systemic or infectious underlying diseases, it is important to address the primary disease in order to manage the gingivitis.
In more severe cases, infected or loose teeth will need to be removed. Treatment may also include antibiotic and/or anti-inflammatory treatment to control the disease. If your cat's gingivitis is caused by an underlying disease, that disease should be treated first along with gum disease treatment.
Pain medications, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and/or anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed.
